Rider Review: Pit Viper High Speed Off-Road Apparel

Pit Viper is a brand that is known for going loud, going large and strutting it’s stuff around the action sports industry. They are a brand that has been focused on it’s unique sunglasses and a no nonsense, uncensored approach to marketing. Earlier this year they launched their High Speed Off-road ride apparel range and we’ve had some of their gear on test for the last 3 months. Here’s our thoughts on their unique range….

The Nitty Gritty

The High Speed Off Road range is a limited edition range that has been extensively developed and tested to bring the best attributes from their ride attire. When we received these at the Brakes Wide Open HQ it was quite apparent that these were some bits of kit that we may like, the colour scheme did however put us off a little. Here’s the nitty gritty of each bit of kit.

High Speed Off Road Unisex DH Pants

The Pit Viper HSOR DH Pants come in the signature marble colour, something that may put some riders off, but may also make some people keen to stand out from the crowd. Extensively developed, there’s no doubt that a fair amount of time and thought has gone into these pants. They do of course come with a price tag to match…

Test Results

We’ve had the HSOR range on test for the last 3 months in Queensland, Australia – a place that’s well known for it’s hot and humid weather. The Pit Viper kit is definitely unique in it’s design and look that may not be for everyone.

The Downhill pants are exceptionally comfortable and are great for both trail riding without knee pads or for climbing aboard a long travel bike and ripping down the trail. It’s fair to say that we found them to be some of the most comfortable and breathable DH pants we have used.

One of the drawbacks we found with the DH pants was how short the legs are, a design that is meant to keep your pants out of the way of your drivetrain – but it’s something we weren’t overly fond of. The design, comfort and fit were otherwise great and they certainly didn’t feel like the heavy DH pants of days gone past. Overall we loved them but some people may not dig the design.

The item we really thought that Pit Viper had smashed out of the park was the jersey, whilst still in the same marble pattern (also available in black) it was lightweight, super comfortable and breathable in the scorching Queensland sun. This probably was one of the most comfortable summer jerseys that we have tested.

The colorway again may put a few riders off grabbing one of the HSOR jerseys and the price point is certainly fairly hefty. Overall we got along well with this bit of kit and there’s not much negative to say about it, it’s a well made and designed jersey that’s great for trail riding.

The HSOR MTB Shorts are a decent bit of kit and we first got them we weren’t one hundred percent sure which market they were aiming for, are these aimed at the XC market or trail market? They definitely aren’t aimed at the DH crowd and for us they certainly seem to be more trail orientated.

The first thing you notice is how slim fitting they are, something that may not apease the masses but something that after testing we actually didn’t mind too much. They are definitely comfortable and breathable but with how slim fitting they are we aren’t sure about the practicality of the pockets.

To be honest they are a great pair of shorts, well designed and super comfortable. There is no shortage of flexibility and for the lycra bandits it may bring them closer to home with their road attire – that being said we did think they were a little to aerodynamic for a pair of trail shorts. The other questions is whether you are willing to part with so much cash for a pair of shorts?

The Final Word

The Pit Viper High Speed Off Road range of ride attire is a good addition to the line up from Pit Viper and it’s great to see the brand branching out into technical clothing. We really love the downhill pants and the short sleeve jersey, they are well designed and feel great on. The shorts are great and well designed but are a little to snug and aerodynamic for everyday trail use in our opinion, that being said some of the riders out there will see that as a great attribute.
