Cannonball MTB Festival 2022 | Thredbo

It’s been a hot minute since we have seen a national level event take place in Australia and with the borders all set to reopen by the start of next year, it’s time for the events to start opening and tires to hit the dirt again. The biggest MTB festival in Australia – Cannonball MTB Festival at Thredbo is back and it’s going to be another epic week long event. Let’s take a look at the details……

Tuesday 8 – Saturday 12 Feb, 2022 | Thredbo MTB Park

There’s five major events for the 2022 festival schedule with something for everyone to get between the tape, heckle on the sideline or sink a few cold ones while taking in the atmosphere. The events include:

  • Osprey All-Mountain Assault | Wednesday 9 February – This event is aimed at short travel all-mountain bikes with a 7km descent testing riders of all levels. Entry costs are $199 for Pro and $179 for all other categories, 2 day lift access included – Tuesday to Wednesday, 8-9 February 2022.

  • Thursday and Friday will see the Fox Flow Motion Cup go down on Thredbo’s famous 5km Kosciuszko Flow Trail. Although not super technical, this race requires a fit efficient type of rider. Competition runs over two days with two groups and a two day lift pass for each group. Pro = $199 | All other categories – $179 includes 2 day lift pass.

  • Rockshox Pump Track Challenge | Friday 11 February – The pumptrack at Thredbo will be cranking with this fun format of racing on Friday. Qualifying runs will be laid down in the morning with finals in the afternoon. Pro = $49 | All other categories = $39

  • Oakley Australian Open Downhill | Saturday 12 February – The corner stone of the race event and the biggest DH pay day for any race in Australia, the Cannonball DH race will attract the biggest names and the fastest riders. It’ll be fast, furious and a true DH spectacle. Pro = $249 | All other categories = $149

  • Deity Whip Wars | Saturday 12 February – This event is invite only and is all about getting sideways, sending big and cranking up the crowd. It’ll be the final event for the festival and you can find out how to apply here.

The Final Word

It looks set to be another awesome Cannonball Festival and we have all sorely missed this type of event in Australia. It’s a festival about all things mountain biking and it has a race for everyone with no shortage of epic events for the spectators too. The festival doesn’t just take place on track with no shortage of nightlife and live music to kick the party in to gear.

We at Brakes Wide Open will be there to bring you all the action and get our fair share of mountain biking stoke on. As always, keep the brakes wide open and see you on the trails…..
