The last round of the South East Queensland Fox Superflow Series by Rocky Trail Entertainment went down on the weekend at Mt Joyce. It was a warm weekend full of rocky trails, dusty corners and long stages; one that tested the stamina of every rider on course. We were there between the tape to bring you all the action…..

It was a warm weekend in October and a time of year that means riding enduro in Queensland is a harder slog than usual, but still well worth a pedal. Sweltering conditions at Mt Joyce challenged the riders with over 30 degrees on both days basting the hill in sun and testing the hydration strategy of even the best riders on course.
Mt Joyce again was the home of the last round of the Queensland Fox Superflow series and after a schedule reshuffle due to lockdowns, it meant it was a little later than planned. That didn’t stop the racers with nearly 180 riders battling the heat to punch some fast times out on the hill and race the way the ride for the last time in 2021.
The ‘Fox’ stage was ‘Big Bertha’ into ‘Sargeants’ which provided a pedal-heavy top section before dropping nicely into the technical gravity DH stage. The ‘Stans’ stage was a lung busting 6-7 minutes for the fast riders, ‘Bovine Groove’ to the tunnel, meaning it was all about redlining and keeping up your momentum. The last stage of the day was the ‘Lazer’ stage which was tunnel vision into ‘Red Ant’ onto the old 4X track and finishing near the event village.
The business end of the day saw Rory McKenzie continue his domination of the series with a clean sweep of wins and taking out the overall for the Elite Men. The Elite Women’s category was won by Jess Hoskin, again showing her speed and taking out the overall. Kade Wise took the win in Expert Men, Olivia Nendick won the Expert Women, Clayton Schultz won Veteran Men 30+ and Cathy Martin won Veteran Women.
The 40+ categories saw some fast times and Glen Pedley won the 40+ Mens with a time that would have picked up 2nd in Elite. Andrea Beier won the 40+ Women’s category, Pete Smith topped out 50+ Men and Julieanne White won the 50+ ladies. The Hardtail category was won by Adam Giles and the Ebike Men and Women were won by Stu Cali and Colette Quinn respectively.
The Junior field saw some super fast times as always and the U19 Men was won by Pat Swindles, U19 Women by Hayley Parsons, U17 Men by Carter Sloan and U17 Women was won by Ella Menigoz. The U15 Men’s category saw Lincoln Ditchburn take the tope step and Tahla Price took the win in U13 Men. Another stellar effort by the juniors with no shortage of riders strapping on a race plate.
It was a great weekend out at Mt Joyce and the physical stages certainly made it a challenging race. Trails conditions were great and the popular race format attracted no shortage of riders again, proving that Queensland is certainly loving the relaxed racing format.
The team at Rocky Trail again put on a flawless event and a great way to end the 2021 Queensland Fox Superflow Series. In a season that has seen plenty of races cancelled or rescheduled, Rocky Trail have still managed to find a way to keep us between the tape, racing with our mates and building on the stoke that is mountain bike racing in South East Queensland.
With the season all but wrapped up across all gravity series in South East Queensland we turn our eyes to next year and take the time in the off season to get ready for another great year between the tape. Brakes Wide Open will continue to bring you all the news, reviews and single track blues in Australian mountain biking and as always keep the brakes wide open……
