In the modern world we love nothing more than seeing people of all genders, creeds and nationalities on the trails; it has nothing to do with anything other than spinning the dirt off the rubber and having a great time doing it. This weekend’s ‘Heels on Two Wheels’ out at Kooralbyn MTB Park was a great event and an event that celebrated women and mountain biking, something there should be more of. We took a look at the action….
Heels on Two Wheels is a mountain biking event that celebrates women and mountain biking, an event that allows all ladies regardless of age or skill level, to strap on a race plate and have fun in a supportive environment. The team at On The Edge Events hosted the ‘Girlduro’ on the weekend at Kooralbyn Valley MTB Park in some stellar weather conditions, a decent turnout of ladies made an epic event.
Event Ambassador Michelle Gane hosted the prelude women’s rides leading up to the event and was there on the day to bask in the sunshine and put some fast times down. A total of 45 girls, ladies and women made their way to the race, taking on the course with gusto, smiles and laughs.
The day started with some chilly conditions, but as the sun poked it’s head over the horizon it was clear it was going to be a great day on the bike. There were three levels available to the racers – beginner, intermediate and expert, with age categories for each level, ensuring that everyone could compete at a level they felt comfortable with.
Beginners completed 3 stages, intermediate 5 and expert completed 6 stages in the five hours allotted, racers could complete each stage as many times as they liked. this relaxed race setup made sure that everyone had a great time, a smile on their face and no pressure to worry about, just ride and have fun with other women.
The Beginner category saw Lucy Downs take the win in 18-39 Women over Sarah Harding and Alanna Harth. The U13 Winner was Elva Leffmann and the 40+ winner in the beginner category was Lucy Downs.
The intermediate category saw Tash Austin take the top step in the 18-39 category over Ellie Evans and Hayley Parsons. Kelly Redmond took the win in the 40+ and Tilly Guy won the U13 Intermediate category.
The Expert category saw the riders complete all 6 stages with Rachel Bracken taking the win over Anna Beck and Shannon Petre in the 18-39 category. The 40+ expert category saw event ambassador Michelle Gane take the win over Jane Rutter and Kate Craft. The U17 Category was one of competition for the Townsend family with Sian taking the win over Nia and Bethany.
Awesome weather, a great trail network and a large contingent of smiling ladies meant that the ‘Heels on Two Wheels’ Girlduro 2021 was a booming success. There was nothing but great feedback to the event organizers and it looks set to be solidified for 2022. It’s exciting to see so many ladies getting on a bike and having a great time racing between the tape, something that there should be much more of!
The event was supported by Yakima, Mended Heart Clothing, Ballandean Wines, Ace Sunglasses and The Kooralbyn Valley Resort. We hope to everyone getting behind the event next year and look forward to seeing you all on the trails. As always, stay safe on the trails and keep the brakes wide open…..
