With the new year now in the past and everyone looking ahead for what 2020 can bring to us all, it’s time to look at the 2020 South East Queensland Downhill Series. 2019 was another good year for DH in Queensland but it was one that left us thinking is this the beginning of the end for DH in SEQ? The answer is a resounding NO. 2020 looks set to be a blockbuster year with more rounds and more locations, meaning we can grab the big rig and get ready to hit the steeps.
2019 saw a decrease in rounds due to a number of reasons, despite all the hard work SEQDH had put in, a few things occurred that meant less races and a new location to race, Kooralbyn. As usual the organisers have spent the off season working hard to get the 2020 race season sorted and have certainly brought us a stellar line up that will give us plenty of variety and no shortage of races.
Round 1: Boomerang Farm March 28 – 29
The first race of the season sees us head to the home of free ride mountain biking in South east Queensland, Boomerang Farm Bike Park. An absolutely awesome ride location, Boomerang Farm is sure to put on another great race weekend. No news on Track choice just yet but we are sure the Outlook Riders Alliance team will keep us updated and will deliver the goods.
Round 2: Tamrookum Creek May 2 – 3
Round 2 of the Series sees us head to Tamrookum Creek Bike Park and the All Mountain Solutions property. Known for it’s natural gnar, loose steeps and no shortage of technical features; Tamrookum Creek MTB Park will certainly be turning it on. Approximately 90 minutes from Brisbane and definitely a great round to sort out some camping and make a weekend of it.
Round 3: Illinbah May 30 – 31
Located on private property, Illinbah is a track that has been etched into the DH race season here in SEQ for some time now. Home to multiple State championships and given a bit of TLC before last year’s race, the Illinbah trail is looking set to provide another epic round. The team at Outlook Riders Alliance manage the track and keep up to date with ride days through them.
Round 4: Canungra June 13 – 14
the Straight to Hell Inc. compound is home to round 4 of the series and will provide another great race full of thrills, spills and dusty descents. Known for it’s natural steeps with big features, steep chutes and no shortage of gravity; Canungra will yet again be another challenging round for all the riders. For ride days head over to the Straight to Hell Inc. facebook page.
Round 5: Toowoomba June 25 – 26
One of the longest tracks in the series and definitely home to some dusty corners, gnarly rock gardens, drops and an exposed sunny track. A fixture on the SEQDH series calendar for some time now, Toowoomba presents another epic road trip location, only 2 hours from Brisbane and perched on top of the Main Range, there’s no shortage of gravity here.
Round 6: Kooralbyn August 22 – 23
Kooralbyn broke its way onto the SEQDH Calendar last year after the round at Mt Joyce fell through. It was a big year for Kooralbyn Valley MTB club with the step forward into both the SEQDH season and the Queensland Enduro series. It had been over a decade since gravity races had adorned the trails of Kooralbyn and some hard work had to be done to ensure the races went off without a hitch. Credit to Kooralbyn Valley MTB and On the Edge Events, as they managed to put on both races aswell as their internal enduro series without a hitch. This round should see a more pedal-orientated race and the fittest riders will certainly have an edge.
Round 7: Kandanga September 19 – 20
The last round of the Series out at Kandanga Creek, home of the 2019 State Champs and an awesome private property that has been steeped in the history of SEQDH round and the downhill community. Known for it’s epic whip off competitions the night before the race and great camping atmosphere, Kandanga will be a fitting place to finish the series.
2020 is set to be another blockbuster year in Downhill racing in South East Queensland and kudos needs to go to SEQDH and White lightning events for setting up another cracking race calendar. Entries are not yet open but we will let you know when they are and Brakes Wide Open looks forward to seeing you out there between the tape….
